Founding of Our Place

Our Place Society was created in 2007 through the merger of two longstanding inner-city ministries—The Upper Room and The Open Door—both dedicated to supporting Victoria’s most vulnerable.

The Upper Room began in 1967 as a simple coffee house offering shelter and food. Over time, it grew to provide transitional housing and meals at 919 Pandora Avenue.

The Open Door was founded in 1986 as a welcoming drop-in centre rooted in unconditional care, operating out of various church spaces until it settled next door at 935 Pandora in 2002.

Sharing a vision of dignity, community, and compassion, the two organizations formally joined in 2005 to create Our Place Society. The purpose-built facility on Pandora Avenue opened its doors in 2007, bringing together essential services, housing, and a deep sense of belonging—all under one roof.
