Position Overview

Our Place Society has taken over the Street Outreach work that was previously being done by Dandelion Society. In the spirit of Dandelion Society, and under the founding principle of unconditional love, we will have a team of two street outreach workers providing support to homeless individuals. These individuals are living on the fringes in the Greater Victoria area and often fall between the cracks. The Street Outreach workers will be mobile with a Van, and meet homeless individuals wherever they are currently staying. The goal is to build relationships with the homeless individuals, connect them to appropriate services and ensure their basic needs are being met.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct van-based outreach to make contact with the most invisible and marginalized homeless individuals staying in parks, bus shelters, living in their vehicles wherever homeless individuals are known to reside.
  • Will fill out appropriate forms and documents to get homeless individual(s) connected to supports such as housing and mental health. (ACT referrals, BC Housing applications)
  • Provide transportation for homeless individuals to various appointments. e.g medical appointments, housing appointments, detox, hospital.
  • Provide transportation to Community Service providers to ensure basic needs are being met.
  • Provide basic supplies to homeless individuals such as tents, sleeping bags and tarps.
  • Case files should be maintained on the homeless individuals of whom service is being provided.
  • Will collect appropriate data to support the program.
  • Ensure program delivery is consistent with Our Place vision and values.
  • Discusses problem situations and remedies with lead workers and outreach workers to resolve difficult or sensitive issues or problems.
  • Is aware of critical incident report procedures and follows all health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Participates in ongoing education, including workshops and seminars on Substance Use Disorder, NVCI, Mental Illnesses, HIV, and other communicable diseases.
  • Maintains open lines of communication between various areas of OPS.
  • Report all incidents, observations, and unsafe conditions through the proper channels.
  • Liaise with partner agencies, and other professionals working in the field.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Previous Outreach experience preferred.
  • Experience and a high comfort level working with marginalized populations is essential.
  • Post-secondary education in a related field preferred, i.e. human services, counseling, health or education or related experience is an asset.
  • Experience working with the homeless is an asset.
  • Experience working with Indigenous population is an asset.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of current social issues related to homelessness, mental illness and substance use disorder.
  • Knowledgeable of community resources.
  • Crisis Intervention skills
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills. Must display tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to interact with people of all ages and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to problem solve and deal with conflict effectively.

Working Conditions

Shifts: Full Time, Days, any 7.5 hours between 6am and 5pm

Compensation: $23.03 to $25.62 per hour.

Benefits: 3 weeks’ vacation. Excellent, full employer paid benefits, after successful completion of 3 months of full-time employment.
