Position Overview

Be part of a dynamic team that provides daily support to the most vulnerable population in downtown Victoria!

The Outreach Worker participates directly in the provision of services, resolves difficult or sensitive issues or problems and maintains a welcoming environment for a diverse homeless population, including people with mental or physical disabilities, people with addictions, women and aboriginal people.

Duties & Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Community Centre Manager/Lead Outreach Worker:

  • Acts as an advocate on behalf of family members, working for rightful justice and fair treatment, taking appropriate action to assist.
  • Monitors computer lab, hygiene area, drop-in floor, courtyard and bathrooms.
  • Maintains open lines of communication between various areas of OPS.
  • Maintains a professional yet compassionate relationship with family members.
  • Ensures program delivery is consistent with the OPS vision.
  • Works alongside and provides leadership, support and training to volunteers in their roles serving community members.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Related undergraduate degree or related diploma with training in mental illness/ addictions/special needs and their related issues.
  • Programs such as: Mental Health Worker, Community Health Worker, Bachelor of Social Work, Social Service Worker Certificate Programs or equivalent experience.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of current social issues related to homelessness, mental illness and drug addiction.
  • Good interpersonal skills. Must display tact and diplomacy.
  • Familiarity with related resources such as access to housing, mental health and addiction support agencies, and government assistance systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to interact with people of all ages and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to problem solve and deal with conflict effectively.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training
  • First Aid Certification an asset.
  • Naloxone training an asset.

Working Conditions/Compensation:

  • Shifts: Tuesday to Friday, 6:15AM to 2:15PM.
  • Compensation: $23.03 to 25.62 an hour.
  • Benefits: Eligible for 3 weeks of vacation annually and excellent employer paid benefits after successful completion of 3 months of employment.
  • This position requires union membership.
