Portraits of Caring

It’s your turn! Immortalize someone you love and respect with a portrait

IT’S YOUR TURN: For the past few years, renowned local artist Elfrida Schragen has painted portraits of emerging youth and community leaders; from lawyer and social activist Trenton Franco to Dr. Bonnie Henry.

This year, you have the opportunity to have a personal portrait done by Mrs. Schragen. Consider a portrait of a spouse, your children, other family members, treasured pets, CEO, board member etc. Each painting will cost between $500 to $1,500. What a wonderful way to immortalize someone you love!

Media Release: Our Place celebrates Admired Youth

Portrait campaign will launch on June 1

VICTORIA, B.C. – Working daily with people experiencing homelessness, poverty and despair, Our Place understands the need to build the next generation of compassionate and empathetic leadership. Fortunately, today’s youth are proving they are ready for the challenge.

To celebrate our region’s incredible, hard-working youth, Our Place has launched a campaign to immortalize a few of these young leaders in portraiture created by talented local artist Elfrida Schragen.

Portraits of Caring 2020

In the spring of 2020, Our Place worked with Elfrida to present Admired: Portraits of Influential Women that produced 40 portraits featuring admired women from Greater Victoria who had achieved notoriety in a variety of areas. With Admired Youth, Elfrida plans to highlight between 25 to 30 youth (ages 18-29) who are making or have made significant contributions to social services by improving nourishment, hope and belonging in our region.

“There are so many impressive youth in our region,” says Julian Daly, executive director of Our Place. “And this is just one small way for us to shine a spotlight on their work.”

An online auction for Admired: Portraits of Influential Women raised over $47,000 in donations for Our Place. A similar auction is being planned for Admired Youth, which will launch on June 1.

“People seemed to love the Admired Women fundraiser,” says Steven Seltzer, manager of special events and corporate giving. “It was a great way to celebrate incredibly positive local stories during challenging times. And the vision and accomplishments of the young leaders we now profile are just as inspiring.”

At this time, Our Place is seeking nominations for five more inspirational youth. If you would like to nominate someone, please contact Steven Seltzer at stevens@ourplacesociety.com

Some of the portraits can be previewed at https://www.elfridasart.com/collections/151724 and all will be available for viewing and donations on June 1 at https://hibid.ca/events/portraits-of-caring

We are reaching out to schools, community groups, businesses, government and charities to find and celebrate these young leaders (see attached nomination form).

As with admired, the portraits with be presented online on www.hibid.ca and will be either available for sale or donors can pay tribute to the portrait(s) they identify with though a donation. If possible, the portraits will be displayed publicly for a period.

Ready to be Inspired… and Help Women in Your Community?

Please visit the Our Place Online Gallery to check out each portrait and read their story.

Then, decide which of the women portrayed you would like to pay tribute to by making an online donation to Our Place Society. We are hoping to reach the goal of $1,000 for each portrait. Perhaps consider forming a group to reach that goal? All bidders will be invited to a future art show of the completed portraits and will receive a tax deductible receipt.

Funds raised will support the Women in Progress project and our Next Steps to Employment program. In its first year, the Next Steps job readiness program saw 106 participants graduate, and 60% have been hired or are in work experience programs. The unique Women in Progress project was developed by manager, Ashley MacDonald. It invites those who identify as female to complete customized skills training sessions, and ensures they feel safe, confident and encouraged to take the ‘next steps’ to a better future for themselves and their families.

About the Artist: Elfrida Schragen

Elfrida has been a key supporter of Our Place for decades. Visitors to our dining hall at 919 Pandora will see the stunning portraits she has created of “family members” and volunteers. Each painting conveys the story of the individual portrayed. Some have since died – which only strengthens the fact that their portrait stands as a testament that every person is unique and that their life mattered.
