Position Overview:

Join our Spiritual Care Team!

The Spiritual Care Chaplain and Manager will lead the Spiritual Care team which provides a progressive, inclusive Christian perspective and also provide resources and programs to serve a variety of faith traditions. The Chaplain and Manager will be responsible for building a spiritual care team and making spiritual care a vital and vitalized part of the life of Our Place Society. The ability to work with and maintain a welcoming environment for a diverse population, including people with mental or physical disabilities, people with addictions and aboriginal people is critical.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage the SC team providing leadership, support and supervision of the team.
  • Provide a pastoral presence to those in need.
  • Create and enhance opportunities to address the spiritual needs of all faiths and those with no faith affiliation across all Our Place sites.
  • Create a safe, welcoming and calming spiritual care space at 919 Pandora Avenue.
  • Build a spiritual care team and presence at Our Place Society.
  • Without proselytizing, provide meaningful spiritual care to our family members so that they might know and feel the unconditional love of the Creator.
  • Liaise with a variety of community faith and cultural groups to provide links and encourage participation in the religious and spiritual life of the family at Our Place.
  • Develop appropriate and meaningful spiritual programs that nurture faith journeys and foster relationships.
  • Recruit, facilitate, train and nurture spiritual care volunteers (including those from within the OPS community) engaged in leading or assisting in these programs.
  • Develop a supportive and collegial working relationship with the on-site Spiritual Care Team, developing some planning jointly and communicating clearly on matters that affect each other.
  • Conduct memorial services as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • MDiv, training in Diaconal Ministry, or equivalent degree, training or experience.
  • Demonstrated, active participation in a Christian tradition.
  • Experience and understanding of Canadian Indigenous history, culture and ceremony.
  • Experience of working with the survivors of Indian Residential Schools and intergenerational trauma.
  • Experience working with and mentoring volunteers.
  • Pastoral counselling skills are a definite asset.
  • Managing staff.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Team building and a strong commitment to team leadership.
  • Ability to offer leadership in spiritual programming and adult education.
  • Celebration of spirituality and life passages.
  • Ability to exercise guidance and oversight of spiritual matters.
  • Comfortable with a variety of denominations and faith-based groups.
  • Empathy, patience, compassion and the ability to offer pastoral care without value judgment.
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills, must display tact and diplomacy and be socially sensitive.
  • Develop strategies to recruit, train and retain volunteers.
  • Ability to interact with people of all ages and cultural backgrounds.
  • Experience integrating concepts of social justice, practical action and street minister.
  • Understanding of First Nations spirituality, community ethos and culture is an asset.
  • Understanding of current social issues related to homelessness, mental illness and drug addiction is an asset.

Working Conditions

  • Shifts – Full Time, Day Shifts, 37.5 hours per week. May be required to work on weekends and holidays occasionally.
