Full Time Spiritual Care Worker

This position is funded by the Canada Summer Jobs plan for youth and the applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. is between 19 and 30 years of age (inclusive at the start of employment);
  2. is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and
  3. is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.

Position  1 x Spiritual Care Worker

Job Summary

Under the leadership of the Manager of Spiritual Care, the Spiritual Care -Summer Youth Placement will work with the Spiritual Care team; providing culturally conscious and inclusive Spiritual Care programs to support a variety of spiritual beliefs and faith traditions. The ability to work with and maintain a welcoming environment for a diverse population, including people with mental health issues and/or physical disabilities, and people with substance use issues is critical.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

·         Work alongside the Spiritual Care team in cultivating an inclusive community for nurturing spirituality and healing.

·         Support the spiritual needs of all spiritualities and faiths, and those with no particular spirituality or faith affiliation across all Our Place sites.

·         Aid in providing culturally sensitive and inclusive spiritual care programming across all Our Place sites.

·         Encourage participation in the spiritual and faith life of the family at Our Place

·         As part of the Spiritual Care team, facilitate culturally appropriate and meaningful spiritual programming that nurture spiritual journeys and fosters relationships.

·         Perform other related duties as assigned by the Manager.

Qualifications and Required Skills

Education and Experience:

  • Pursuing, post-secondary education is an asset, although not essential, with preference in the human and social services field in a Degree, Diploma or Certificate program such as: BSW, Mental Health Worker, Community Health Worker, Mental Health and Addiction Worker and Social Services Worker.
  • Related experience working with people experiencing homelessness, mental health issues and/or substance use issues, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, is an asset.
  • Experience in providing spiritual care to people experiencing homelessness, mental health issues and/or substance use issues, is an asset.
  • Experience and/or understanding of a variety of spiritual beliefs and faith traditions.
  • Experience and/or understanding of homelessness, mental health Issues, and substance use issues.
  • Experience and/or understanding of Canadian Indigenous history, culture, and ceremony.
  • Experience of working with the survivors of Indian Residential Schools and intergenerational trauma, is desirable, although not essential.
  • Counselling skills are a definite asset.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to aid in facilitating a variety of Spiritual Care programming.
  • Comfortable collaborating with a variety of spiritual beliefs and faith traditions.
  • Empathetic and the ability to offer spiritual care without value judgment.
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills must display tact and diplomacy and be socially sensitive.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with challenging behaviour and stressful situations.
  • Ability to work independently and show initiative and creativity.
  • Ability to deal in a positive collaborative fashion with individuals, family members/residents and community contacts.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to interact with people of all ages and cultural backgrounds
  • Effective personal boundary setting skills with both family members/residents. and co-workers.
  • An established approach to personal self-care practices/activities.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, First Aid Certification, Trauma-Informed Care, and Mental Health First Aid training are an asset.
