Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Community Centre Manager, the Hygiene Worker assists with the provision of services in the Hygiene area.

The Hygiene Worker works in a hectic environment and must be a multi-tasker; dealing with service users in the hygiene/clothing area as well as guiding volunteers and various other clinical programs that operate in the hygiene area, such as foot care. The hygiene worker also assists service users with direction on information to community resources.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Create a safe, welcoming, and calming environment for the individuals in the hygiene area and be observant of the environment and provide calming intervention as required to ensure the safety of everyone and ensure all policies are being respected.
  • Signs up service users to access showers and lockers.
  • Performs safety check in bathrooms and hygiene area to ensure service user safety and act if service users are engaging in drug use in the area.
  • Provide first response to crisis intervention as required, including medical first response and overdose response.
  • Deal with crisis situations such as mental health crisis and challenging behaviors by applying non-violence crisis intervention techniques such as supportive listening and other appropriate de-escalation techniques.
  • Under the direction of the Community Centre Manager the hygiene worker assists with ordering and inventory of supplies for the support area.
  • Communicate with team members, Manager and Team Lead and work alongside them to de-escalate and resolve situations. Call for assistance when appropriate.
  • Greets volunteers and the service users, replies to general inquiries, and refers people/inquiries to appropriate staff.
  • Report all incidents, observations, and unsafe conditions through the proper procedures.
  • Monitors the area to always maintain a clean and tidy state.
  • Cleaning showers and managing shower list.
  • Coordinates volunteers by providing guidance, training, and orientation.
  • Provides Community Centre Manager monthly statistics to meet funding requirements.
  • In conjunction with the Manager of Wellness Services, the hygiene worker provides support by booking service users and assisting the external volunteer clinicians that provide services such as foot care and hair cutting. They support by monitoring the area for safety and obtaining any supplies the clinicians might need.
  • Participates in ongoing education such as Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and Mental Health First Aid and similar training programs.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage efficiently and effectively diverse workload, prioritize tasks and to multitask.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to problem solve and de-escalate effectively.
  • Ability to work in an intense and challenging work environment.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Ability to navigate stairs and be able to stand for up to 6 hours of shift.
  • Ability to kneel to ground to attend to overdoses and other medical emergencies.

Qualifications

Education and Knowledge:

  • Certificate in a related human/social services field.
  • Current First Aid Certification

Training and Experience:

  • One (1) year of experience in a related field

OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Working Conditions/Compensation:

Shifts: Casual, shifts may vary.

Compensation: $24.56 to $28.16 per hour. Casual employees will also receive 11% of their straight time pay in lieu of scheduled vacation and paid holidays.
